MARINA PEREZ-WONG & ELAINE CHU
Muralists Marina Perez-Wong and Elaine Chu are the duo behind Twin Walls Mural Company (TWMC). Founded in 2013, TWMC has painted over 30 murals across the Bay and New York City. The San Francisco natives met in 1997 at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts. Under mentor Susan Kelk Cervantes, they began professionally painting murals at Precita Eyes Muralists Association. Working collaboratively like twins, the duo are motivated by the power of art in healing trauma, transforming the individual and collective, and capturing a community’s history, struggles, and dreams. Intricate, visual narratives of community are expressed through semi-realism, symbolism, and bright, saturated colors. Employing symbols related to women, nature, spirituality, justice, and community, their work is reflective of growing up in the Bay, the women and individuals that inspire them, and the changes they want to manifest in the future. Perez-Wong earned her BFA from California College of Arts & Crafts and has worked as a muralist and teaching artist. She is a third-generation San Franciscan and a cancer survivor. Elaine Chu studied drawing, painting, and art history at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and has worked as a muralist and teaching artist. TWMC has painted murals for SFMOMA, the Asian Art Museum, the Chinese Historical Society of America, Twitter HQ, and more.
